Philosophy of Ministry:
My philosophy of ministry consists of several relevant points. As a spiritual leader and overseer of the church (cf. 1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:6-9), the pastor has a responsibility to draw on his spiritual gifts and fruit of the Spirit to prepare the church for the work of ministry (Ephesians 4:12). The most important aspect of this responsibility is to demonstrate love for people (Colossians 3:14). The pastor should endeavor to express this love tangibly by being active in serving others, being genuinely interested in their lives, and being committed to intercessory prayer for them.
The pastor also has a responsibility to effectively communicate the truth of Scripture. Pastoral preaching should examine the meaning of the biblical text and suggest present-day application. Sermons are to be built upon fervent prayer, solid and thorough research, and an intimate knowledge of the congregation. The sermon and other elements of a worship service should complement each other and work together to clearly illuminate God’s word.
I believe that the church’s effective communication of the gospel is maximized when the Sunday School, worship services, and other ministries of the church are in alignment with the church’s pursuit of its God-given vision. Further, the church should strategically plan not only to help its members mature in their Christian walk as they prepare for ministry, but also to intersect and positively impact the lives of those who have not yet come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
It is my desire to foster and encourage a church environment in which: 1) prayer is recognized as essential and powerful; 2) Christians will desire to witness about Jesus and be involved in and supportive of missional activities at home and abroad; 3) non-Christians will hear the gospel, be urged to accept Jesus as their Lord, and be given opportunity to respond to God’s working in their lives; 4) all people feel the freedom to repent from sin and turn to Christ with the encouragement of the church; and 5) Christians may worship the Lord earnestly and be given opportunities and assistance in maturing their faith.

Civic/Community Involvement:
As the husband of a doctoral student and the father of an infant, there is precious little time to be involved in the community outside the church. The most regular means by which I do this is through my participation in the Senseney Music Community Band. I have long enjoyed playing the tuba, and this affords me the opportunity to indulge this passion as well as to meet and interact with lost people and others from outside of my church. I have found that I can serve as something of a chaplain to many of the other band members.
Hobbies and/or Other Special Interests and Abilities:
Tuba performance – I have played the tuba for over 20 years and have enjoyed being a performer with various ensembles (currently, Senseney Music Community Band) and a private brass instructor for many individuals and school districts in Arkansas, Texas, and Colorado.
Reading – I enjoy reading theological literature as a means for continued academic and personal development as well as a variety of other books with an affinity toward the history of World War II, biographies, and various genres of fiction.
Hymnology – I enjoy studying the context and theology of hymns and spiritual songs. I have occasionally applied this passion by composing song texts as a complement to my sermons. I recognize the worth of all Christian music, aged and modern, for worship.
